Stellantis unit FCA US will pay $4.2 million to settle a California investigation into emissions violations involving 2014-2016 Ram ProMaster diesel vehicles. The vehicles were found to have unapproved devices bypassing emissions controls, releasing 55 tons of excess nitrogen oxides. As part of the settlement, FCA US will recall and update the affected vehicles’ emission systems. The funds include a $2 million civil penalty for California’s Air Pollution Control Fund and $2.1 million to support a project incentivizing slower ocean cargo vessel speeds to improve wildlife protection and air quality.

This follows previous settlements, including a $5.6 million California agreement in 2022 for similar violations and a $300 million U.S. Justice Department settlement in 2022 over diesel emissions fraud. Additionally, FCA settled with California in 2019 for using “defeat device software,” paying $78 million to the state as part of a $500 million national settlement.
